This project was a design response to the statistic “Lacking social connection is comparable to smoking 15 cigarettes a day” drawn from the study by Holt-Lunstad, Smith, and Layton (2010) published in PLoS Medicine. This mixed-media installation uses video, voiceover, personal essay and data to explore loneliness as both a global health issue and a deeply personal experience. Through POV walking footage and a reflective audio essay, the work visualizes loneliness as a looping, lived state - less a problem to solve and more a condition to carry. It is part data narrative, part emotional documentation but primarily informative in nature.
The personal essay, in the form of a small booklet or a pamphlet, was an accompaniment to the video installation piece which was a reflection on my own relationship with loneliness experienced through different points in my life.
This project was a response to the Curate & Build module of my MA Communication Design course at Falmouth University. It was displayed in an exhibition titled Echoes: Data. Reflection. Interpretation., put together within the university space by the MA Communication Design cohort of 2024-25.
